Tangent and normal lines
The tangent line to a curve at a point is the line that matches the curve's direction at that point, and its gradient is . The normal line is perpendicular to the tangent at the same point. Many tangent problems in the exam are solved with both lines.
The tangent line
A line is fixed by a point and a gradient: . For the tangent at the point with -coordinate we know both pieces of information:
- the point is , with the -coordinate found from the function;
- the gradient is , the value of the derivative at .
If the question asks for the tangent parallel or perpendicular to another line, you do not need to guess the point from the graph. Just equate to the gradient you are given and solve for .
The normal line
How to write the two lines
Worked examples
Tangent and normal at x = 1
Let . Find the equations of the tangent line and the normal line to the graph of at the point with -coordinate . Give both in the form .
a) Tangent line.
b) Normal line.
Solution
First the point: , so the point is .
The derivative is , and the gradient at is .
a) Tangent:
b) The gradient of the normal is : Check: for the normal gives , which is the point.
Tangent parallel to a line
Let .
a) Find the -coordinates of the points on the graph where the tangent is parallel to the line .
b) Find the equation of the tangent line at .
Solution
a) Parallel lines have the same gradient. The gradient of is , so we look for the values of with . The derivative is : We check the points: and . The points are and , and at both the gradient of the tangent is .
b) At : and . The tangent is
Tangent, normal and a parameter
Let , where is a real number.
a) Find the gradient of the tangent at in terms of .
b) The tangent at is parallel to the line . Find .
c) Using the value of from the previous part, write down the equation of the normal line at in the form .
Solution
a) The derivative is , so This is the gradient of the tangent at .
b) The line can be written as , and its gradient is . For the tangent to be parallel, must hold, that is, .
c) With , the point is with . The gradient of the tangent is , so the gradient of the normal is :
In the exam: the parameter is found from a condition on the gradient, and that condition must be written down before you solve for . For the normal, do not forget the minus sign or the reciprocal of the gradient: a normal with gradient instead of is not perpendicular.
Common mistakes
Summary
- The tangent at is : it passes through and has gradient .
- The normal is perpendicular to the tangent: if .
- If the tangent is parallel or perpendicular to a given line, equate to the corresponding gradient and solve.
- Always write the point with its -coordinate before giving the equation.
