Antiderivatives of powers and indefinite integrals
Integrating undoes differentiation: given , we look for an antiderivative whose derivative is . In the exam it appears mostly with powers and polynomials, and almost always comes with a condition that allows you to work out the constant in the answer.
Antiderivatives and the constant of integration
If is an antiderivative of , so is for any number , because the derivative of a constant is zero. That is why a function has infinitely many antiderivatives, which differ only by a constant.
To check a result, differentiate your answer: you should get the integrand. It is the quickest check and the one that avoids almost all mistakes.
The power rule
Integrating a power is the reverse of differentiating it. When differentiating, the exponent goes down by one and multiplies the power; when integrating, the exponent goes up by one and the power is divided by the new exponent.
Constants, sums and multiples
With the power rule and three more properties, any polynomial can be integrated term by term.
Finding an antiderivative with a condition
A general antiderivative has a constant with no value. To determine a particular curve, the question gives a point it passes through, and that point fixes .
With a parameter in the derivative, each condition gives one equation. Two conditions allow you to find the constant of integration and the parameter at the same time.
Worked examples
An antiderivative through a point
The function is the derivative of a function . Find the antiderivative that satisfies .
Solution
We integrate term by term: The condition gives , so .
Check: , and the derivative of is , which is .
Answer: .
Water flowing into a tank
A water tank receives water at a rate of litres per minute, for , where is the time in minutes. When measuring starts (), the tank holds litres.
a) Find the function that gives the amount of water in the tank at time .
b) Calculate the amount of water in the tank after minutes.
Solution
a) The amount of water is the antiderivative of the inflow rate: Since and , we have . Therefore
b) Substitute : After minutes there are litres in the tank.
Answer: , and after minutes there are litres.
A parameter in the derivative
The derivative of a function is , where is a real number. It is known that and .
a) Find the value of .
b) Write the complete function .
Solution
a) Integrate the derivative: With we get , so . The second condition gives
b) With , the function is .
Check: , , and , which matches the given derivative.
In the exam: each condition gives one equation. With a parameter and a constant, you need two conditions, and the exam awards marks for both the value of and the final function.
