Volumes of solids of revolution
If you rotate a plane region one full turn about an axis, you obtain a solid: a cone, a sphere, a vase. Its volume is found by cutting the solid into very thin discs and adding them up, which is an integral. It is Higher Level content, with and without a calculator.
Rotation about the -axis
Let be continuous on . The region between its graph and the -axis is rotated one full turn (, or radians) about the -axis.
Cut the solid with planes perpendicular to the -axis. Each cut is a disc of radius and thickness , with approximate volume . Adding all the discs between and :
Since the radius is squared, the sign of does not matter: the part of the region below the axis also contributes positive volume. Check this with solids you already know: the cylinder () gives , and the cone () gives .
Region between two curves
When the region lies between (upper) and (lower), with , the solid has a hole. Each cut is a washer: a disc of radius with a disc of radius removed from its centre.
Be careful: it is the difference of the squares, not the square of the difference. If the region lies partly above and partly below the axis of rotation, split it into pieces and treat each one with its outer and inner radius.
Rotation about the -axis
If the rotation is about the -axis, the discs are horizontal and are stacked along . The radius is the value of , so you must express in terms of , that is, use the inverse function.
