Homogeneous differential equations
3 worked examples · By Álvaro López
Key idea
Some differential equations do not look separable at first sight, but in them x and y always appear "together", in the combination xy. The substitution y=vx turns them into separable equations. This is content exclusive to HL, and the exam usually gives the substitution, but you need to recognise the type.
What a homogeneous equation is
The way to check is to divide the numerator and denominator by the highest power of x and see whether only xy remains. For example,
dxdy=2xyx2+3y2=2xy1+3(xy)2
is homogeneous (the numerator and denominator were divided by x2). By contrast, dxdy=xx+y+1 is not: the +1 breaks homogeneity (all terms must have the same degree).
The substitution y=vx
Let v=xy, so y=vx with v a function of x. By the product rule:
dxdy=v+xdxdv.
Substituting into the equation gives v+xdxdv=F(v), that is,
xdxdv=F(v)−v,
which is separable: ∫F(v)−vdv=∫xdx.
Worked examples
Example 1★ Basic
A first substitution y=vx
Solve dxdy=xy+1 for x>0, given that y=2 when x=1. Give y as a function of x.
Solution
The equation is already of the form F(xy) with F(v)=v+1. With y=vx:
v+xdxdv=v+1⇒xdxdv=1⇒dv=xdx.
Integrating: v=lnx+C. Undo the substitution: y=x(lnx+C). With y=2 at x=1: 2=1⋅(0+C), so C=2.
y=x(lnx+2).
Example 2★★ Medium
With squares
Solve dxdy=2xyx2+3y2, for x>21 and y>0, given that y=1 when x=1. Give y as a function of x.
Solution
Divide the numerator and denominator by x2: dxdy=2v1+3v2 with v=xy. With y=vx:
v+xdxdv=2v1+3v2⇒xdxdv=2v1+3v2−2v2=2v1+v2.
Separate the variables: 1+v22vdv=xdx. Integrating: ln(1+v2)=lnx+C, that is, 1+v2=Kx with K=eC.
Undo the substitution: 1+x2y2=Kx. With y=1 at x=1: 2=K. So y2=2x3−x2 and, as y>0,
y=x2x−1.
Example 3★★★ Hard
A solution with a tangent
Consider the differential equation
dxdy=x2x2+xy+y2,x>0.
a) Show that with y=vx one obtains xdxdv=1+v2. Write 1+v2 as your answer.
b) Find the particular solution that satisfies y=3 when x=1.
c) Calculate the exact value of y when x=e−π/12.
Solution
a) Dividing by x2: dxdy=1+v+v2, with v=xy. As dxdy=v+xdxdv:
v+xdxdv=1+v+v2⇒xdxdv=1+v2.
b) Separate: 1+v2dv=xdx, and integrate: arctanv=lnx+C. With x=1, v=3: arctan3=3π=ln1+C, so C=3π. Then v=tan(lnx+3π) and
y=xtan(lnx+3π).
c) With x=e−π/12: lnx=−12π and −12π+3π=4π. So y=e−π/12tan4π=e−π/12.
In the exam: in a) marks are given for writing the derivative of y=vx as v+xdxdv and reaching the required result without skipped steps. In b), undoing the substitution (y=xv) and using the initial condition are two separate marking points.
Common mistakes
Summary
Homogeneous: dxdy=F(xy) (all terms of the same degree).
Substitution y=vx: dxdy=v+xdxdv.
This gives xdxdv=F(v)−v, which is separable: ∫F(v)−vdv=∫xdx.
After integrating, undo the substitution (v=xy) and apply the initial condition.
