Combining functions and composition
Functions can be combined like numbers: added, multiplied or divided, and also chained, so that the output of one becomes the input of another. This last operation is called composition, and it is the basis of the inverse function and of the chain rule in topic 10.
Sum, difference, product and quotient
Given two functions and , new ones are defined by operating on their values at each :
The domain of the sum, the difference and the product is the set of that are in the domain of and in the domain of at the same time. For the quotient, you must also remove the for which .
Composition of functions
Read it as " composed with ", and apply it from the inside out: in the inner function, , acts first. To write the formula, replace each in by the full expression of .
Composition is not commutative: in general, . With and you get , but .
Domain of the composition
It is important to find the domain before simplifying the formula. In the example below, one of the compositions simplifies to an expression that seems to accept more values than it really does.
Worked examples
Operating on and composing two functions

Domains of a composition and of a quotient
Let and .
a) Find the formula of .
b) Find the domain of .
c) Find the formula of in its simplest form.
d) Find the domain of .
e) Find the domain of .
Solution
a) .
b) is defined for all . You need to be in the domain of , that is, : or . The domain is .
c) .
d) Although is defined for all , the domain of the composite requires to be in the domain of , which is . Then is in the domain of (all reals). Domain: .
e) You need (domain of ) and , that is, (and , which is already excluded). Domain: .
Finding a function from its composite
Let . The function satisfies .
a) Find .
b) Find expanded.
c) Solve the equation .
d) Find .
Solution
a) By definition, . Equate it with : Check: .
b) .
c) . The solutions are and .
d) .
In the exam: make the order clear. Write "" and substitute with brackets. When you have to find an unknown function, check the result by substituting: it is an easy mark to secure.
