Inverse function: how to find it and what it means

3 worked examples · By Álvaro López

Key idea

The inverse function undoes what does: if takes to , the inverse takes back to . It is used to solve for the input variable of a model, for example to find the price before a surcharge that corresponds to a given final price.

One-to-one functions

A function is injective (or one-to-one) if two different values of always give different values of . This is the condition for it to be undone: if two inputs gave the same output, you would not know, on going back, which one you started from.

The function passes the test, because a non-horizontal line is always one-to-one. By contrast, does not: . However, it can be fixed by restricting the domain: if only the values are considered, the function is one-to-one and has an inverse.

Definition of the inverse

Notation warning: is not . The denotes the inverse function, not an exponent.

How to find the inverse

With : from we solve , and swapping the names gives . Check: and .

The graph of the inverse

If the point lies on the graph of , the point lies on the graph of . That is why the two graphs are symmetric about the line : one is the reflection of the other in that mirror. If a function has an -intercept at , its inverse has a -intercept at .

Function f(x) = x² − 4 for x ≥ 0 and its inverse f⁻¹(x) = √(x + 4) as a reflection in the line y = x, with pairs of symmetric points marked

Composition of functions

The composition applies first and then :

It is read as " after ". In general, and are different. Composition explains the inverse: applying a function and then its inverse returns the starting value,

This property is useful for checking that an inverse has been calculated correctly.

Worked examples

Example 1 Basic

Inverse of a linear function

Let .

a) Find .

b) Calculate .

Solution

a) Write and solve for : , so . Swap the names of the variables: .

b) . Check: .

Example 2 Medium

Inverse with a restricted domain

Let , with domain .

a) Find .

b) Write down the domain of .

c) Calculate .

Solution

a) From we obtain . As the domain of is , only the positive root works: . Swapping the names, .

b) The domain of is the range of . For , , so . The range of is , and that is the domain of . It agrees with the condition for the root: .

c) . Check: .

Example 3 Hard

Price with surcharge and discount

An online shop calculates the final price of an item from its base price , in euros. First it applies a surcharge for handling costs, using the function . Then it subtracts a voucher of €, using the function .

a) Find the function that gives the final price as a function of .

b) Find the inverse function .

c) A customer pays € for an item. Find its base price.

d) Explain what represents in this context.

Solution

a) Apply first and then :

b) Write and solve for : Swapping the names of the variables, .

c) The final price is , so the base price is Check with the direct function: .

d) takes the final price paid, , and returns the base price of the item. It undoes the two steps in reverse order: first it adds back the € voucher, then it divides by (removing the surcharge).

In the exam: in a composition, the order matters: means "first ". If you do it the other way round, you get , which is a different function. Always check the inverse with a value, as in part c).

Common mistakes

Summary

  • A function has an inverse if it is one-to-one: no horizontal line cuts its graph more than once.

  • To find it: write , solve for and swap the names of the variables.
  • Domain of = range of , and range of = domain of .
  • The graphs of and are symmetric about .
