Optimisation: maxima and minima in context

3 worked examples · By Álvaro López

Key idea

An optimisation problem asks for the value of a variable that makes a quantity maximum or minimum (an area, a cost, a volume). It is solved with derivatives: you write the quantity as a function of a single variable and find its extrema. In IB exams it is a classic context question, in Paper 1 and Paper 2.

What is being optimised

In each problem there is a quantity we want to make as large or as small as possible: the objective function. There are also one or more constraints (a fixed length, a given volume...) that relate the variables. The idea is to use these constraints so that the objective function depends on a single variable. Then you know how to differentiate and find extrema, as in the previous section.

How to justify that it is a maximum or minimum

When there is only one critical point, is usually enough: if it is a minimum; if , a maximum. If , or is hard to calculate, study the sign of on either side of the point. A statement such as " changes from positive to negative, so it is a maximum" earns the same marks.

Worked examples

Example 1 Basic

An enclosure against a wall

A farmer has m of fencing to enclose a rectangular plot that has one side against a wall. The wall needs no fencing, so the fencing covers only three sides. Let metres be the length of each of the two sides perpendicular to the wall.

a) Write the area of the plot in terms of .

b) Find the value of that makes the area a maximum.

c) Find the maximum area.

Solution

a) The sides perpendicular to the wall measure each; the side parallel to it measures . The area is , with .

b) . Since , it is a maximum.

c) The other side measures m, so m.

Example 2 Medium

The can with the least surface area

A closed cylindrical can must have a volume of cm. Let be its radius and its height, in centimetres. We want to use the least amount of metal possible, that is, to minimise the total area.

a) Write the total area in terms of .

b) Find the radius that minimises the area and the corresponding height.

c) Find the minimum area.

Solution

a) Volume: , so . The total area is that of the two lids plus that of the side:

b) . To justify the minimum: for all , so is a minimum. The height is cm.

c) cm.

Example 3 Hard

A window with fixed perimeter

A window is in the shape of a rectangle topped by a semicircle. The semicircle has radius metres and the rectangle has height metres, with base equal to the diameter. The total perimeter of the window (the three straight sides plus the arc) is m. The window must let in as much light as possible, that is, its area must be a maximum.

a) Express in terms of .

b) Show that the area is .

c) Find the value of that maximises the area, justify that it is a maximum and calculate the maximum area.

d) Calculate the ratio for the optimal window.

Solution

a) The perimeter is: two vertical sides (), the base () and the arc (). So , and

b) The area is that of the rectangle () plus that of the semicircle ():

c) Domain: requires . m, which lies in the domain. , so it is a maximum. Maximum area: m (using ).

d) With we get . Therefore and the ratio is .

In the exam: the objective function, the derivative, the critical value and the justification of the maximum are marked separately. Also write the domain: without it, a critical value outside the allowed range could go unnoticed.

Common mistakes

Summary

  • Objective function: the quantity being maximised or minimised. It must be written in one variable using the conditions in the question.
  • Differentiate, solve and justify with or with the sign of .
  • Always check the domain and the endpoints of the interval.
  • Answer what the question asks (variable, optimal value) and include units.
  • In Paper 2, the graph of the objective function lets you find the maximum or minimum with the calculator.
