IB Math AA vs AI: Which Should You Choose?

Two different kinds of mathematics, not one hard and one easy. The choice should start from your target degree, not from fear of algebra.

The single most consequential choice a student makes when enrolling in the IB Diploma is probably their mathematics subject: Analysis & Approaches (AA) or Applications & Interpretation (AI). And within each, Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL). Four possible combinations that open or close university doors for years afterwards.

The most common mistake is assuming AI is a lighter version of AA. It isn't. They are two different courses with a different emphasis. This article is here to make the decision clearer.

The two courses, in one sentence each

Exam structure

Both subjects share a general external-exam structure sat in May:

• SL: Paper 1 (90 min) + Paper 2 (90 min) → 80% of the grade. The remaining 20% is the Internal Assessment.
• HL: Paper 1 (120 min) + Paper 2 (120 min) + Paper 3 (60 min) → 80% of the grade. IA is 20%.

HL's Paper 3 consists of extended mathematical-investigation problems. In AA it tends to lean toward proof and algebraic manipulation; in AI, toward modelling a real case with several tools chained together.

Which to choose, by target degree

Engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science

AA HL is the sensible choice. If it isn't viable given the overall Diploma workload, AA SL. Competitive universities (Imperial, ETH, MIT, ICAI...) often require AA HL as an admission condition or a decisive advantage.

Medicine, biology, health sciences

AA SL or AI HL both work well. AI HL can even be preferable, since its inferential-statistics component matches the methodology you'll meet at university. AA HL doesn't offer a real advantage for a medical degree.

Economics, business administration, finance

AI HL is the optimal choice for degrees with a strong quantitative component (pure Economics, Mathematical Economics). For a conventional business degree, AI SL is enough.

Architecture, design, applied civil engineering

AI HL or AA SL, depending on the theoretical weight of the programme. The most demanding architecture schools ask for at least AA SL.

Humanities, non-quantitative social sciences

AI SL is the sensible option. It covers the IB's mathematics requirement without eating into time the student needs for other subjects.

Access to Spanish universities

The Spanish EBAU equivalence for the IB Diploma accepts any of the four combinations (AA SL/HL, AI SL/HL) for admission to any Spanish university degree. Weighting in the voluntary phase is similar between AA and AI, although a few specific degrees give AA HL a slight preference.

In practice, this means that to get into Medicine at UV or Aeronautical Engineering at UPV, AI can be enough. Whether it prepares you well for the first two years of the degree is a separate question.

When to drop from HL to SL

The hardest IB decision is usually made in March of IB1. If a student is consistently scoring 3s or 4s out of 7 in HL and the rest of the Diploma is also struggling, dropping to SL in time is the right call. Staying in HL "out of pride" when the material isn't under control can put the full Diploma at risk.

Each school sets its own internal deadlines, but the IB's usual cut-off for level changes sits around November or December of IB2. The earlier the decision is made, the better.

Myths worth dismantling

• "AI is for students who aren't good at maths." False. AI demands data analysis, rigorous modelling and fluency with the graphic calculator. A solid 7 in AI HL is just as respectable as a 7 in AA SL.
• "AA HL opens every door." Only true if you pass it with a good grade. A 4 in AA HL can close more doors than a 6 in AA SL.
• "If AI uses a graphic calculator, it must be easier." It's different. The calculator saves manual computation but demands knowing which function to use, how to interpret the result, and when a result doesn't make sense. That's intellectual work, not a shortcut.

How to decide, in order

1. Which degree are you interested in? If it's still unclear, assume STEM and plan for AA.
2. Does your target university require AA HL? If so, there's no decision to make.
3. What's your current level in mathematics? A 7-8 (out of 10) at age 15-16 supports going for HL; a 5-6 points toward SL.
4. How much time will the rest of the Diploma absorb? If you're carrying a demanding EE and CAS load, drop a level.
5. Do you have someone to lean on for HL? Without external support or an experienced teacher, HL on your own is very hard.
